NAEMT Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)

The NAEMT Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support course is an internationally recognised programme designed to improve trauma care and reduce mortality in pre-hospital environments.

Developed by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians in cooperation with the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, PHTLS is regarded as a global standard in pre-hospital trauma education. The programme equips emergency care professionals with critical thinking skills and evidence-based techniques to assess and manage trauma patients effectively.

This intensive two-day course strengthens clinical decision making and practical trauma management skills through structured learning and realistic simulations.

Course Content

The programme follows a systematic approach to trauma care and focuses on evidence-based assessment and management strategies.

Emphasis is placed on rapid identification of life-threatening injuries and prioritised interventions in line with international trauma principles.

Course Details

Duration

The standard provider course is delivered over two days, totalling 16 classroom hours.

Where required, the programme may be structured over successive weekends or adjusted scheduling formats while maintaining the minimum required instructional hours.

Certification

Upon successful completion, participants receive:

  • An internationally recognised PHTLS provider certificate valid for four years
  • A PHTLS provider wallet card

Course fee: €250 per person, including the official PHTLS manual and access to the online learning platform.

Assessment

Participants are assessed through:

  • Ongoing instructor evaluation during skills stations
  • Scenario-based performance assessments
  • Written examination

Successful completion requires demonstration of both theoretical understanding and practical competence.

The course is recognised for 16 Continuing Professional Competence points for PHECC-registered EMTs.

 

Requirements

  • Participants must be physically able to perform practical skills, including chest compressions and airway management.
  • Students must demonstrate effective practical skills during the course.
  • Participants should have sufficient English language proficiency to engage fully with instruction and assessment.

Method of delivery

The course is delivered in English by certified instructors and includes:

  • Case-based learning
  • Structured trauma assessment frameworks
  • Practical skills stations
  • Scenario-based patient simulations
  • Facilitated group discussion

Participants receive a PHTLS manual and access to online learning resources to support pre-course preparation and continued professional development.

Renewal

A one-day, eight-hour renewal course is available for participants who have successfully completed the two-day provider course within the previous four years.

A current PHTLS provider certificate or wallet card must be presented at registration. On successful completion of the renewal course, certification is extended for a further four years.
