PHECC Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Course
The PHECC Emergency Medical Technician course prepares participants to deliver patient care in both pre-hospital and inter-facility emergency settings.
This intensive programme combines structured theory with practical skills training, including patient assessment, cardiac first response advanced, and patient moving and handling. Continuous assessment supports skill development throughout the course.

Course Content
The programme covers a comprehensive range of topics aligned with PHECC standards, including:

- Secondary survey
- Clinical anatomy and physiology
- Airway and ventilation
- Respiratory emergencies
- Cardiac First Response Advanced

- Bleeding, shock and soft tissue injuries

- Gaining access to the patient at scene

Course Fees
€2,000 inclusive of:
- All course manuals and materials
- Copy of PHECC Clinical Practice Guidelines
- Uniform trousers and polo shirt
- EMT kit including pouch, stethoscope, sphygmomanometer, shears, pupil torch and pen
A €500 booking deposit is required to secure a provisional place. The deposit becomes non-refundable and non-transferable within four weeks of the course start date.
Full payment is required no later than two weeks prior to course commencement unless a written payment plan agreement has been approved.
The PHECC examination fee of €100 is payable directly to PHECC and is not included in the course fee.
Course Details
Course Structure
Classroom Learning
120 hours of theory and practical instruction, delivered full-time or part-time.
Clinical Placement
40 hours of supervised placement on Medicore’s ambulance fleet.
Examinations
Two days of PHECC examinations consisting of:
- Multiple Choice Question examination
- Objective Structured Clinical Examination
Certification
Upon successful completion of the PHECC examinations, candidates may apply for registration on the PHECC practitioner register and apply for a practitioner licence.
Registration enables graduates to practise as Emergency Medical Technicians within Ireland in accordance with PHECC standards.
Assessment
Final assessment is conducted by PHECC and consists of:
- A Multiple Choice Question examination assessing theoretical knowledge
- An Objective Structured Clinical Examination assessing practical competence
Candidates must pass both components to qualify.

Requirements
- Minimum age of 18 years
- Successful completion of Garda Vetting prior to clinical placement
- Sufficient English language proficiency to engage with theory and assessment
Garda Vetting is initiated at the start of the programme. Delays in clearance may result in delayed clinical placement allocation.
