Course Description

The programme combines structured theory with practical skills training to ensure competence in adult, child and infant resuscitation.

Key areas covered include:

Updates and key changes in Basic Life Support
Critical concepts of high-quality CPR
The American Heart Association Chain of Survival
One-rescuer CPR and AED use for adults, children and infants
Two-rescuer CPR and AED use for adults, children and infants
Differences between adult, child and infant resuscitation techniques
Bag-mask ventilation for all age groups
Rescue breathing techniques
Relief of choking for adults, children and infants

Emphasis is placed on effective team-based resuscitation and safe, structured response to cardiac arrest.

Course Details

Duration

The course duration ranges from 3 to 5 hours depending on class size and delivery format.

Certification

Upon successful completion, participants receive a digital certificate issued by the Irish Heart Foundation and the American Heart Association.

Certification is valid for two years and is recognised internationally.

Assessment

Participants are assessed through:

A practical scenario-based skills assessment
A 25-question multiple-choice examination

The minimum pass mark is 84 percent, equivalent to 21 correct answers.

Who’s It For

The Basic Life Support Provider course is intended for healthcare professionals who provide direct patient care in a variety of clinical environments.

Participants may include, but are not limited to:

Doctors
Nurses
Dentists
Physiotherapists
Occupational Therapists
Medical and Nursing Students
Allied Health Professionals

Requirements

There are no formal prerequisites for this course.
Participants must be physically able to perform chest compressions on a manikin while kneeling.
Students should have sufficient English language proficiency to participate fully in instruction and assessment.

Method of delivery

The course is delivered by a qualified Irish Heart Foundation instructor and includes:

Video-guided instruction
Practical demonstrations
Hands-on skills stations
Scenario-based assessment

A blended learning option is available, allowing participants to complete an online component prior to attending a practical skills session.

The course is delivered in English.

Renewal

Certification remains valid for two years. To maintain qualification, participants must complete the full course again prior to expiry. There is no shortened refresher course for in-date certificate holders.
