Safe Administration of Medications
Safe Administration of Medication (SAM or SAMS) training in Ireland is designed for healthcare professionals, social care workers, and carers to ensure compliance with HIQA standards when managing medication. These courses focus on reducing medication errors, understanding legislation, and mastering safe handling, storage, and administration techniques.

- 10 Rights of Medication Administration: Patient, medication, dose, route, time, documentation, reason, education, refuse, evaluation.
- Legal & Regulatory Compliance: Adherence to Irish healthcare regulations and HIQA standards.
- Medication Types & Forms: Oral, liquid, patches, inhalers, and eye/ear/nose drops.
- Safety Procedures: Safe storage, disposal, and handling of high-alert medications.
- Documentation: Accurate recording and reporting of medication errors.

Who’s It For
There are currently no prerequisites for this course. Students should be physically well enough to carry out CPR as well as other practical skills, such as attempting to relieve the blockage in someone who is choking. placing somebody in the recovery position and putting bandages on injured limbs.
Requirements
First Aid Response (FAR) is a new training standard developed by the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council of Ireland.
FAR also includes the full Cardiac First Response Community standard.
Method of delivery
The course is facilitated by an instructor from Medicore Medical Services who will use PowerPoint presentation and videos to guide you through the course.
The course is delivered through English.
Renewal
In order to maintain your qualification after your two-year certification period you will be required to undertake a two day recertification course.
Recertification should take place before your current certificate expires.
