Heartsaver AED and PHECC CFR Community Instructor – Dual Certified

The Heartsaver AED and PHECC CFR Community Instructor course is designed for individuals who wish to become certified instructors in CPR, AED and Cardiac First Response Community programmes.

This dual certification pathway enables successful candidates to deliver recognised Heartsaver AED and PHECC CFR Community courses within workplaces, community organisations and voluntary groups. The programme focuses on both clinical skill proficiency and effective instructional techniques to ensure high-quality course delivery.

Course Description

The programme combines instructional methodology with supervised teaching practice and includes:

Heartsaver AED and CPR from an instructor perspective
PHECC CFR Community instructor add-on
AED trainer presentation delivery
Manikin hygiene and infection prevention
Recovery position instruction
Effective instructor behaviour and teaching techniques
Managing challenging learners
Recognising and addressing poor instructional practice
Role play and teaching simulations
Skills testing and evaluation
Irish Heart Foundation administrative requirements

Participants are trained to deliver engaging, structured and compliant courses in line with awarding body standards.

Course Details

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course and monitoring process, participants receive:

An Irish Heart Foundation and American Heart Association instructor certificate
A PHECC CFR Community Instructor certificate

Certification is valid for two years and is internationally recognised.

Renewal

Instructor certification is valid for two years.

To maintain qualification, instructors must:

Deliver a minimum of four courses within the two-year certification period
Complete the required monitoring or update process as specified by the awarding bodies

Failure to meet activity requirements may affect instructor status.

Candidates must demonstrate a high level of practical CPR and AED skill proficiency before undertaking instructor training.

Requirements

A valid Heartsaver AED provider certificate issued within the previous 12 months
Demonstrated high-level CPR and AED skill competence
Physical ability to perform multiple cycles of CPR during the two-day programme
Access to a computer with internet access for required online components
Adequate English language proficiency to deliver instruction and assessment

Eligibility may be verified prior to enrolment.

Method of delivery

The course is delivered in English and includes:

Instructor-led sessions
Video-supported learning
Role play
Practical teaching demonstrations
Supervised skill refinement

The face-to-face portion of the programme is delivered over two days.

Monitoring and Qualification Process

Upon completion of the initial two-day programme, participants are designated as Instructor Candidates.

To achieve full instructor status, candidates must complete a three-step monitoring process:

Observe a qualified instructor delivering a course
Assist with course delivery under supervision
Deliver a full course in the presence of an Irish Heart Foundation faculty member

Successful completion of all monitoring requirements is necessary for full certification.
